Meet Your Instructor: Jimena Alvarado, Ph.D.

Jimena Alvarado, Ph.D. teaches several sections in VOICES (Visioning Organizations: Inclusive Communities & Equitable Spaces). She teaches Historical Framework, Identiy: Constructions, Assignments, and Intersections, and Gender and Sexuality.

Jimena Alvarado teaches Women’s Studies at Portland Community College, where she serves as the Chair of the Women’s Studies Committee. She is passionate about social justice pedagogy, constantly evaluating and refining her teaching techniques to improve her social justice classes. She uses a popular education and flipped classroom methodology; putting the learners at the center of the experience and drawing from their lived experiences and expertise. Her research areas include power differentials in heterosexual relationships, HIV prevention, the conceptualization of stigma and psychiatric stigma.
