Crackin’ Open a Dream
Meet Francine Voit and Nicola Buffo, the dynamic duo behind Pistakio, a company reimagining how pistachios are enjoyed. What began as a college project blossomed into a full-fledged business. “We’re Nico & Fran, two pistachio lovers on a mission to reimagine the way pistachios have been eaten for centuries!” While Nicola hails from Italy and Francine spent a year there in cooking school, it was during their time in Savannah, GA, that the idea for Pistakio took root. Unable to find an affordable, non-imported pistachio product, they set out to create their own.
Nuts About Growth
Their journey took them from a humble farmers market table to the West Coast. After graduating in June 2023, they moved to Portland, OR, where they heard it was a great place for small food businesses. The move was challenging, but their determination paid off. By April 2024, Pistakio had launched officially and swiftly expanded to 70+ stores and nationwide shipping. “Our favorite part of this whole journey is taking our community along the ride with us,” shares Nicola.
From Humble Beginnings to Sweet Success
The road wasn’t always smooth. “We found ourselves in Portland with a business idea that we had no idea how to start,” recalls Francine. That’s where the PCC SBDC and their Getting Your Recipe to Market (GYRM) course came in. This program was instrumental in helping Pistakio get off the ground, offering essential guidance and connections. “These first steps were so crucial to getting our foot in the door and making connections in an entirely different city and industry.”
Spreading the Love
The Getting Your Recipe to Market (GYRM) training program helped Pistakio pivot from their initial savory spread idea to a sweet pistachio spread that was easier to produce and more market-friendly. This change was a game-changer, leading to their successful pitch to New Seasons Market, which became their biggest account. “We launched into 2 large grocery store chains (New Seasons + Market of Choice) with 30+ stores total,” says Nicola.
Pistachio Power
Pistakio’s journey is just beginning. Despite being a new business, they have achieved remarkable milestones, launching in 75+ stores across the country. Their future plans include raising capital in Fall 2024 to support their growth and secure a co-packer to meet demand. “We’re still an emerging small business that launched just a couple of months ago... since launching, we’re in 75+ doors!” Francine adds.
Harvesting Success
For other small business owners considering the PCC SBDC, Francine and Nicola have this advice: “The PCC SBDC provided the tools and resources to jump start our business but ultimately, it’s up to you to put the work and hustle for it. If you have the passion and dedication but need the groundwork, then it’s 100% worth it.” Their story is a testament to the power of passion, community, and the right support.
