5 Small Business SEO Tips to Get Found First

Posted by PCC Small Business Development Center on May 07, 2018

small business seo tipsAn important ingredient for small business success in today’s digital environment is visibility in search engine results. When someone searches for a product they need, will it be your business they find or one of your competitors? Think of your own practice when you’re searching for a website. Do you ever click over to the second page of results? If you’re like most consumers, you probably click on one of the first two or three results. So, how do you increase your chances of showing up in one of those top positions?

In this post, we’ve put together 5 small business SEO tips that can help your company get found first.

5 Important SEO Tips for Small Businesses

1. Invest in a quality website.

Your website must be well designed and mobile-friendly. Importantly, because SEO is a fundamental part of a business’ online success, it should be part of the website design process, not something that’s added later. Search engines must be able to easily crawl (or browse) and understand your content, and SEO is a vital part of that. A well-designed website helps search engines index your site more efficiently.

2. Create quality content with targeted keywords related to your business and services.

Content is one of the top three ranking factors for Google. Your content should help customers understand why they should choose your company instead of one of your competitors. In addition, it’s important to target keywords in your content to improve search engine rankings. However, keep in mind that search engines typically are able to detect so-called “keyword stuffing” — that is, filling your post with keywords — so, don’t overuse them. Remember that you are writing for your audience. While your content should be designed around keywords, it should be readable and flow naturally.

3. Provide valuable information on your website.

Blogging is one of the best ways to establish yourself as a thought leader and an expert in your niche. Consistent, non-promotional, sharable content helps expand your audience. When planning content, think in terms of gaining exposure with consumers who don’t yet know they need the product or service you provide.

4. Include quality links.

When it comes to links, think quality over quantity. Links are a vital part of getting good search results, but it’s important to link to authoritative content from influencers in your industry.

5. Optimize your website.

Without an optimized website, you will miss out on traffic, leads, and new customers. Website optimization involves a content strategy that includes everything listed above. It means researching and monitoring keywords and ensuring that your content provides value. Quality content is well-written, free of grammatical errors or typos, and organized around keywords.

These 5 tips are basic but important. Keep in mind that SEO is only one part of your overall business and marketing strategy. In addition, your keyword list should be monitored and updated as needed. Track the performance of keywords and be aware of how keywords in your industry change over time.

SEO is a vital part of growing your business. Ranking well in search results has become a fundamental part of any marketing strategy. A well-designed website and quality content that provides value for your customers will not only grow your brand but also grow your customer base and increase sales.
