PCQI PCC SBDC

The PCC Small Business Development Center will offer Preventative Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) Training for food manufacturers during the spring term. PCQI training will equip you with knowledge to get your PCQI certification, but is also structured to guide you to develop all elements required to develop a food safety plan, including a completed food product recall plan.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation aims to ensure safe manufacturing, processing, packing and holding of food products in the United States. The regulation requires that a Food Safety Plan be completed by a “Preventive Controls Qualified Individual” (PCQI) who has “successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls at least equivalent to that received under a standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by FDA or is otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system.”

FDA Food Modernization LogoPCQI training at PCC Small Business Development Center uses a “standardized curriculum” recognized by FDA as one way to meet the requirements to become a “preventive controls qualified individual.”

PCQI certification training is a blended curriculum combining online video instruction and a 1-day classroom-based practicum in Portland. The online training videos come with weekly video-conference presentations offered live by the instructors. Training is organized with week-by-week exercises to develop background information for your product description, process narrative, food hazard analysis, hazard risk assessment and preventive controls strategy. The PCQI training is further structured to give each participant a chance to engage one-on-one with instructors while developing and implementing their individual Food Safety Plan.

The PCQI training instructors include a distinguished PQCI lead instructor and experienced industry professionals.
